## Advisor Style & Mentorship
The PI was very apporachable and accessible. He was creative and often came up with new research ideas and directions for you.
There were no group meetings and 1:1 meetings happened around once a week.
Our lab rarely had postdocs. But the PI is very well connected with professors in other departments and universities, so students could easily seek additional mentorship if they wished.
## Expectations for PhD Students
Not sure if there was a strict requirement for graduation from this PI. But the general expecataion from the department was that a student should have at least submitted three academic papers when they defend their thesis.
We didn't have any atrocious clocking system or anything like that. As long as the student could present a fair amount of work in individual meetings, the work hours were flexible.
Previous students from the lab graduated around 5 years on average, with some variation depending on the student. This should be roughly on par with the department average.
## Funding & Support
A fair number of the lab members were self-funded by fellowships. Students were sometimes asked to help write grant proposals to attract fundings.
The PI encoraged students to do various scientific communication activities, such as talking to news reporters.
The PI also greatly supported students' applications for fellowship and travel grants.
## Research
Students in the lab traveled frequently to regional and natiaonl conferences. Typical ones included American Physical Society, APS Division of Fluid Dynamics and Society of Integrative and Comparative Biology. These conferences provided great opportunity for students to practice presenting their research and network with people from the same field.
The research projects in the lab was very diverse and each student usually focused on their own project. Collaboration within the lab was rare, but collaboration with external labs was very common.
The PI had a great reputation of doing curiosity-driven and fun research. He is well-known in the field of biomechanics, etc.
The exact project a student undertook depended on the funding situation and might change within the PhD years.
