## Advisor Style & Mentorship Jerry is a relatively hands-on advisor with bi-weekly 1:1 meetings as well as weekly group meetings. Slides showing progress are expected at each of these meetings. While this mentorship style may be a lot for some students, it allows the students who are very driven to keep measurable status of their progress. Furthermore, the advice and mentorship that Jerry provides during these meetings is unparalleled. He is truly one of the best in his field.
## Expectations for PhD Students Students typically graduate in 5 years. Previously Jerry expected 3-4 papers to be published before graduation, however, recently he has focused on fewer, higher impact papers. The expectation for work at night or on weekends has also diminished, but expect to put in some late nights if you want to be a truly successful student.
## Funding & Support Jerry is a big name in the field of soft mechanics and Additive Manufacturing. As such, he has access to a large amount of funding and is able to support large purchases and PhD students for all 5 years. Typically students attend 1 to 2 conferences per year, depending on their productivity. If a paper is published, typically Jerry will allow you to present the work at a conference. As for personal support, Jerry will ask very basic questions and may attempt to get to know you on a relatively surface level in the first few years. After year 3 or 4, however, you will find that Jerry will take a deep interest in your life and provide exceptional mentorship and support. He has a deeper side although he doesn't show it for a while.
## Research Jerry is absolutely an expert in the field. The research directions that he finds are absolutely promising and will set his students up for a successful career in academia or industry. In the first few years he typically assigns projects, however, he very much welcomes new ideas after you have your feet wet. Be sure to perform an extensive literature review and get to know the field quickly. Otherwise you may be trusted less when you have new ideas.
## Lab Culture Internships are typically only reserved for the best students who have sufficiently published. Summers are times when fewer classes are taken so research progress ramps up. Previous students have dropped out of the lab because of the fast pace and high expectations. Other students have simply had personality conflicts with Jerry.
Overall, if you want to set yourself up for a career where your work as a scientist is recognized and respected, Jerry's lab will facilitate that. Nonetheless, it will be challenging. If you want to enter the PhD program simply for the title, this lab may not be the best for you.
