    ## Advisor Style & Mentorship
Mentorship is poor. The PI barely provides useful mentorship to his students. Meanwhile, he spends most of the time on something beneficial for himself. The students usually have no idea what the PI is doing all the time and have to do all things themself, which is so-called "independent researching".
The PI is also mean when treating his students. Two students were expelled by completely cutting off the funding because the PI thought they were not qualified. Ironically, they both graduated when they transferred to other labs and keep their career in academia now. What was shocking to me is that he can stop funding a woman student because she was not able to do research when she was about to give birth.
The PI is good at the computational part, but his knowledge or interest in experiments is significantly lacking. This leads to bad consequences for the students who are doing optical experiments because nobody knows how to do.
In summary, this PI is selfish, mean and lack of sympathy. If you are lucky enough to join this lab, you will spend a good time here.

    ## Expectations for PhD Students
While he rarely provides useful mentorship, he has a high expectation to his students. 4 to 5 journal papers are required by the PI. In addition, he really wants to aim for some with high impact. Such high aims for the students are such a pain.

    ## Funding & Support
Nearly all from NIH. The PI's fundings mainly come from NIH with some minor projects' funding coming from somewhere else.

    ## Research
Very bad. There are no team activities in this lab. There were some in the early time but as time goes, group meetings became the only activity.

    ## Lab Culture
Computational Biomedical Optics and Experimental Optics.

    ## Additional Information
It is strongly not recommended to go to this lab. You will suffer a lot in the lab. Most are suffering from graduating.

No, I don't recommend this PI.
