I had Dr. Hemscheidt for some classes, particularly that Chem 641 Structural Organic Determinations Class.
Dr. Hemscheidt was also one of my Committee Professors during the time I was at the stage of doing my Oral Comprehensive Exams.
I did NOT have Dr. Hemscheidt as a P.I. but based on my experience of having him for a Committee Professor as well as some of the classes I took with him, combined with what I observed in how Dr. Hemscheidt mentors his Masters & PhD Students in his lab back in the day, I come to the conclusion that Dr. Hemscheidt is NOT a good professor & I feel prospecting students must be cautious in selecting Dr. Hemscheidt as their P.I., Committee Professor, or even take his classes.
When I had him for Chem. 641, I see his lectures were NOT clear enough & he expects everyone to know. I also suspect Dr. Hemscheidt have favorite students in that class, where I feel he grades his favorite students very well but with other students struggle like myself, he just slams you with a Bad Grade like a D or a Fail with no questions ask, despite your best efforts to keep up. I see Dr. Hemscheidt expects a lot from you & if you do not keep up with his expectations, he will fail you no questions ask. I tried commenting about this experience on Rate My Professor, but Rate My Professor cannot allow me to incorporate his Chem. 641 class & seems to only focus on the Undergraduate Classes like Chem 272/273 or 161/162.
I also had Dr. Hemscheidt as a Committee Professor. During my first attempt with the First Oral Comprehensive Exam, I see Dr. Hemscheidt was very critical at me, asking me way too many hard questions. I answered them to the best of my ability, but I see he seems to never be satisfied compared with the other Committee Professors. I ended up failing my First Oral, of which I suspected he was the one behind it. I ended up replacing Dr. Hemscheidt with a different Committee Professor at the Chemistry Department & that's where I successfully pass the Redo First Oral Exam, & the rest of the Oral Exam with the Dissertation very easy afterwards, but ended up spending an extra year because of Dr. Hemschedt's overly critical statements about my progress as a PhD Student, despite he is just my former Committee Professor.
I also knew some of Dr. Hemscheidt's former Graduate Students who worked for him back in 2015-2017. So far only 1 student in his lab successfully completed his PhD. The rest dropped out & his lab was empty since 2017 until the day he declared sudden retirement somewhere in 2018. One of them told me that Dr. Hemsheidt is one of those "Micromanager" type professors, where they are NEVER SATISFIED with anything you do, despite your efforts to do well to get his validation. One of them told me that Dr. Hemsheidt is a Toxic Perfectionist, where expect you either get the material & do it right or else, just quit while you had the chance to not waste his time. Dr. Hemscheidt has this mentality of "if I suffered to get my degree, so should you" where that mentality gets to the point where it is toxic & draining rather than helping you make progress in working on your degree. Finally every time you make a mistake, he would accuses you of not study hard enough & lazy & incompetent instead of tolerating you as just a student with still learning. Calling students lazy & incompetent does not help.
Overall, I heard Dr. Hemscheidt is retired after 2018 & I have to say Thank God he is gone. But based on my experiences & experiences from my peers who had him for a P.I. just be warned that Dr. Hemscheidt is a Toxic Micromanager type professor & a Perfectionist. Therefore, I do not recommend Dr. Hemscheidt to be in any of your classes, or PI Advisor or Committee Professor.
